SANTA CLARA (KRON) --- The Niners are a step closer to calling Santa Clara home.

The South Bay community's city council has approved the contract to spend $878 million to build the new stadium in a parking lot of the Great America amusement park.

The contract calls for contractor Turner-Devcon to have the 68,500-seat stadium ready for fans to cheer on the 49ers for the 2014 pre-season.  If the stadium isn't ready in time, Turner-Devcon would have to pay $6 million for each game missed.   The contractor also faces potential daily fines for failing to meet the deadline.

Crews are already assembling supplies for the stadium across the street from the Niners current headquarters in Santa Clara.

The new stadium means the Niners will play the team's home games somewhere other than the city of San Francisco for the first time since 1946.
