SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Anti-war activists are marking the ninth anniversary of the start of the Iraq War to make note of the men and women who have died in that conflict.

Members of Iraq Veterans Against the War and other demonstrators took to San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza to reconstruct an exhibit they call "Eyes Wide Open."

Activists set up combat boots to represent each of the 481 Californians who have died as part of "Operation Iraqi Freedom."

Organizers say they hope the symbolic exhibit will help people understand the costs of war.  The U.S. ended combat operations in Iraq at the end of last year.
