CONCORD, Calif. (AP) - Police say a preliminary investigation shows the teen accused of running over and killing a father and his 9-year-old daughter in Concord had been speeding and had made an unsafe lane change.
Investigators are still trying to determine whether the 17-year-old boy was texting or talking on the cell phone when he allegedly crashed into 41-year-old Solaiman Nuri and his daughter Hadessa on Saturday.
The two were riding their bikes on the sidewalk. The boy was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.
Police are awaiting cell phone records. They are also looking into whether the boy was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
In the meantime, police say he could be released as early as Tuesday evening. Juvenile suspects must be charged within two business days of an arrest.
