OAKLAND (KRON) -- When kids return to school from Spring Break, many of them may bring head lice with them back to the classroom.
Now several campuses in Oakland are gearing up for a spate of cases as the school year comes to an end.
"For us, when there are ten to twelve appointments a day, that's an outbreak," Melissa Shilliday with Nit Pixies, a company that specializes in head lice removal, tells KRON 4's Alejandra Cerbal.
Neither the Alameda County Health Department nor the Oakland School District keep records of head lice cases. Shilliday says every year there's a spike in cases immediately following Spring Break.
She says cases spread as kids go on sleepovers and take part in other group activities during the break.
The expert says there's no real way to prevent head lice. She says it costs $25-to-$100 per treatment.
