SAN JOSE (KRON)--Groundbreaking is set to begin Thursday to extend BART service to Santa Clara County.
On Wednesday, a BART train car traveled from Hayward to San Jose to be put on display for Thursday's groundbreaking ceremony for BART's Silicon Valley Berryessa Extension Project--a 16 mile extension from Fremont to Santa Clara County.
The first phase of the project will include the creation of two BART stations, one at Warm Springs and a second in north San Jose. The second phase will include building a 5.1 mile subway tunnel through downtown San Jose that ends near the Caltrain station in Santa Clara.
According to the Santa Clara Valley Transporation Authority, service is expected to begin before 2018. Thursday's groundbreaking is scheduled for 2 p.m. at 1404 Mabury Road in San Jose.
