SALINAS (BCN)--Salinas police say they are still investigating a shooting that killed a 16-year old high school student earlier this week.
Police responded to reports of a shooting victim lying in the street at Calaveras Drive and Ukiah Way around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
When police arrived, Oscar Alejandro Camberos was found with two good Samaritans and was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso, police said.
Camberos was taken to a hospital, where he died from his wounds on Wednesday, according to police.
Police suspect that the victim may have been walking home from North Salinas High School, where he was a student, before he was shot, police said.
He was wearing a gray, plaid button-up shirt over a white T-shirt and black jeans, police said.
Police are not sure how many suspects were involved in the shooting, or where those suspects fled after the incident.
Due to the nature of the crime, police believe that the shooting was gang-related.
It is the eighth homicide in Salinas so far this year, police said.
A memorial for the victim has not yet been scheduled, pending an autopsy that will likely occur on Monday, police said.
Police are asking anyone with information about the case to call (831) 758-7226 or an anonymous tip line at (831) 775-4222.
