OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A man convicted of conspiring to operate a teenage prostitution ring in the San Francisco Bay area that included underage girls has been sentenced to nine years in prison.

A federal judge in Oakland issued the sentence against 40-year-old Mahendar Singh on Wednesday. Authorities say Singh and his wife, 22-year-old Helen Jean Singh, recruited the teenage girls by promising them money, drugs and a family-like environment.

They then allegedly used force and threats to control them.

The couple was arrested in South San Francisco in August when police looking for a runaway teen allegedly found Mahendar Singh with two 16-year-old girls and a 19-year-old girl.

The couple pleaded guilty to the conspiracy charge in January. Helen Singh is awaiting sentencing.
