SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) -- A San Francisco man who allegedly posed as a doctor and illegally performed medical procedures, including lip and buttock augmentations, is now facing rape charges as two additional victims have come forward, prosecutors said.
Carlos Guzmangarza, 49, who also went by the name Carlos Guzman, allegedly operated Derma Clinic, a dermatology clinic in the 2500 block of Mission Street and assumed the identity of a physician's assistant with a name similar to his, prosecutors said.
He was arrested and pleaded not guilty in December to charges stemming from allegations that he performed liposuction on a woman. Along with allegedly smoking a cigar during the procedure, Guzmangarza later came to the woman's house and flushed six pounds of her fat down the toilet, prosecutors said.
The woman's abdomen later became infected and required additional treatment, according to the district attorney's office.
Six other victims came forward between January and March, saying Guzmangarza performed procedures such as facelifts, lip and buttock augmentations, and today, prosecutors amended the complaint to add two new victims in the case.
Assistant District Attorney Evan Ackiron said in court Tuesday morning that the new charges include three counts of rape, as well as three counts of forcible oral copulation and three counts of penetration with a foreign object.
Those charges are in addition to his previous charges, which include nine felony counts of practicing medicine without a license, six felony counts of assault and two counts of battery for the various procedures he allegedly performed on the victims.
He also faces three felony counts of false impersonation, two counts of identity theft, seven counts of grand theft, two felony counts of sexual battery on an unconscious victim, one misdemeanor count of sexual battery against someone's will and other sexual assault charges, prosecutors said.
Guzmangarza remains in custody in lieu of $1 million bail and faces more than 30 years in prison if convicted of all charges. He will return to court for a preliminary hearing on July 17.
His attorney, Deputy Public Defender Michelle Tong, declined to comment on the case outside of court.
Anyone who was treated by Guzmangarza at the Derma Clinic is asked to contact investigator Douglas Becker of the Medical Board of California at (408) 437-3680 or Lt. Carlos Sanchez of the district attorney's office at (415) 551-9569.
