San Bruno to Keep Two Schools Open

SAN BRUNO (KRON) -- Crestmoor Elementary and El Crystal Elementary schools in San Bruno will remain open despite falling enrollments and the loss of state education money.

The San Bruno Park School Board voted Wednesday night to save the two campuses, much to the delight of parents, students, and teachers who had organized to save the schools.

Administrators had recommended closing one or both schools to maintain higher standards at the district's five remaining campuses.

Community members said it was particularly important to keep Crestmoor open because its attendance zone includes the area of the San Bruno Gas Line Explosion.  A natural gas line that detonated there in September of 2010 left eight people dead and more than 50 homes damaged or destroyed.  Many of those pushing to save Crestmoor argued closing the school would have been too traumatic for students still coping with the disaster's aftermath.

It's unclear what steps administrators will take next to try to balance the budget while keeping both campuses open.
