Vallejo School Board Votes to Lay Off 90 Workers

VALLEJO (KRON) -- School bus and garbage truck drivers are among those set to lose their jobs with the Vallejo School District after a close vote of the system's board.
Trustees voted 3-2 to approve the layoffs for 14 of the district's 30 bus drivers after the same panel decided last month to eliminate home to school bus transportation.
The bus drivers are among 90 employees who will soon be looking for new employment. Vallejo schools say they are facing budget stress because of vast cuts to state funding for local public education.
Many district workers say they feel betrayed by the vote after they agreed last month to five furlough days that were to have saved nine jobs.
Superintendent Ramona Bishop told the board further examination of the district's finances showed both the cuts and the furloughs would be needed to pay all the bills.
