CASTRO VALLEY (KRON) -- The parents of a two-year old boy severely injured in a dog mauling in Castro Valley are facing criminal charges for child endangerment. The child's father is in custody. His mother was arrested and then released to seek medical treatment, authorities say.
37-year old Jared Perkins was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon. The child's mother, 30-year old Brandi Gomes reportedly is still receiving treatment. It's unclear if she was hurt during the attack on her child.
Investigators say unsanitary conditions inside the house mark one element of the child endangerment charge. The family reportedly told authorities the child was attacked inside his bedroom but sheriffs detectives say there's no physical evidence of that. Authorities are not convinced the attack happened in the bedroom or even inside the house.
KRON 4's Dan Kerman spoke with a postal carrier who brings mail to the home on Gary Road in Castro Valley. That's close to the I-238/I-580 interchange.
The letter carrier says he was chased by a dog from the same residence last week. He says there are at least four or five dogs living at the house. The Postal Service recently ordered the family to move their mailbox from the front door to the street so he wouldn't have to encounter the dogs anymore.
Investigators say the dog that attacked the child is a German Shepherd/Pit Bull mix. The child reportedly suffered serious injuries in the assault which did happen at the home on Gary Road.
The attack which happened at about 2:00 a.m. Tuesday came just hours after another two year old child was injured when the family pit bull attacked at a home in Concord. That child is expected to survive but the dog was euthanized.
