SANTA ROSA (KRON)--A girls' basketball coach at Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa has pleaded not guilty to having sex with a 16-year-old student.
Andrew John Medeiros, 25, of Santa Rosa, is charged with two sex crimes with a person under age 18 that allegedly occurred on April 2. He entered his plea Wednesday in Sonoma County Superior Court.
Authorities say Medeiros was arrested on April 11 at Piner High School, where he was employed as a student supervisor. He was released from custody after posting $50,000 bail.
According to police, Medeiros met the 16-year-old girl at Cardinal Newsman High School where he worked as the girls' basketball coach last season.
Investigators say the girl's parents contacted authorities after they discovered sexually explicit text messages between Medeiros and the teen.
The two charges against Medeiros are sex with a foreign object and oral copulation with a person under 18.
Medeiros also coached for the North Bay Elite Basketball Club.
A preliminary hearing date is scheduled for July 10.
