AMERICAN CANYON (KRON)--Veteran's Memorial Park in American Canyon is in the dark after thieves stole 1,500 feet of copper wire used for lighting.
Police say it is unclear when the thieves stole the copper, but believe it was within the last few days. The copper, which was removed from boxes of wiring in the ground, was used by the park to supply power to the lamps that illuminate the flagpole. City officials estimate that it will cost about $7,000 to make repairs and say one solution would be to place locks on the boxes or fill the boxes with cement so that thieves would not be able to easily steal the wiring.
Officials say the repairs should be completed by Memorial Day. Meanwhile, the park plans to continue to raise the flag daily even though it won't be illuminated.
