OAKLAND (KRON) -- Some Oakland residents say they've stopped wearing gold jewelry in public because of a rash of robberies targeting so-called "bling."
Oakland police handed out fliers Thursday in the Fruitvale district where a number of recent robberies have taken place.
"She had a necklace and they took it away from her," one witness tells KRON 4's Haaziq Madyun about a crime she witnessed. "They took it in less than five minutes."
Haaziq talked with one man who said he had stopped wearing gold in public. Another man seemed confident no one would target him for a robbery. Still police say people should be aware of their surroundings and not offer easy targets for criminals.
Police say the victims have been women, men, and even sometimes some small children.
