MENLO PARK (KRON) -- More than a week after a disappointing initial public offering, Facebook is getting some good news closer to home.
The Menlo Park City Council voted Tuesday night to approve the social media giant's plan to expand its campus. The unanimous approval followed an endorsement of the expansion from the city's planning commission.
Under the new plan, Facebook will be allowed to expand from 3,500 employees at the former Sun Microsystems campus near the western approach of the Dumbarton Bridge to a planned 6.500 workers.
Traffic with the new workforce remains a concern. Facebook has said it will encourage its workers to use public transportation or to bicycle to work. Officials in nearby Atherton have prompted legal action if traffic grows too heavy in the area.
Facebook has also promised Menlo Park more than $14.5 million worth of benefits over the next 14 years.
