PLEASANT HILL (BCN) -- A man stabbed and killed a pit bull after it attacked his dog  during a walk in Pleasant Hill on Thursday night, authorities said.

The incident in the 700 block of West Boyd Road was reported  around 8:15 p.m. Thursday, Animal Services Lt. Dan Barrett said.

A man and his wife were walking their Great Pyrenees-Australian  Shepherd mix around the neighborhood when two loose pit bulls approached and  began attacking the dog, Barrett said.

The man told police and animal control officers that he kicked the  pit bulls to try to get them off of his dog.

When the pit bulls continued their attack, the man pulled out a  pocketknife and stabbed both dogs once, Barrett said.

One of the wounded dogs ran across the street and later succumbed  to its injuries, while the other was located by its owner and taken to a  nearby veterinary center with severe injuries.

Barrett said that neither the pit bulls nor their owners have any  record of neglect and that both dogs were licensed and spayed or neutered.

      The incident remains under investigation.
