PALO ALTO (KRON) – Police say a would-be burglar never got the chance to steal anything when he broke through the skylight of a Palo Alto market Wednesday evening.

Just before 11:30 police responded to a business alarm at JJ & F Market on College Avenue in Palo Alto. They found the suspect, 31-year-old Gustavo Alvarez, hiding behind a tree located at the rear of the grocery market.

Following an investigation, police determined Alvarez broke the skylight glass and then repelled into the store using a black satellite cable. Once inside, the alarm sounded and Alvarez fled out the back door and jumped over a barbed wire fence. The arriving sergeant was able to detain the suspect.

Alvarez is booked in the Santa Clara County Main Jail on one count of burglary.
