SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (AP) - At least 3,000 drivers will get money back for red light tickets in South San Francisco, thanks to an error in finalizing the contract with the company that installed the cameras.
Officials say the city council neglected to ratify the contract with American Traffic Solutions Inc., which installed the cameras last summer. That means the city could not legally operate the automatic cameras.
The contract was finally ratified Jan. 27.
Mayor Mark Addiego says the city contacting motorists caught by the red light cameras between Aug. 15 and Jan. 27 to pay back the $446 fine or the cost of traffic school.
Officials say the refund will cost the city at least $1.4 million, in addition to thousands in staff costs needed to help figure out whom to refund.

| Anyone receive refunds as of yet? Like the above commenter, I have since refrained from going to San Mateo whenever I'm at SFO - there are other options. $500+ that they took is enough for me to never go back there. That and the loss of the business should more than balance things out. |

| I called last March and asked about my refund. I was able to speak to an officer and I was told to wait. That was April and its already end of May. Were is my refund? How come its taking them so long? I bowed not to visit San Mateo County anymore. |

| I called up San Mateo traffic ticket hot line number and It was a voice recorded machine. They want you to leave your citation number, name and phone number. So far its been 4 days, no replies yet? Whats up with that? Traffic lights should be removed! Its a milking cow for the city of San Mateo and its represents a bad image. I never want to visit San Mateo county anymore! |

| I contested my ticket but they still but the county still cashed out my check. I glad someone presistent discover the flaw. I'm from San Diego and visiting San Mateo when i got the ticket The ticket fined caused me not to my 3 kids what they really want for Christmas. |
