Judge Says There's Enough Evidence to Prosecute Three in BART Shooting Verdict Protests

Three people charged with felonies in connection with violent protests in Oakland following a verdict in the Johannes Mehserle case are heading to trial.  An Alameda County judge on Monday ruled there was sufficient evidence to try 46-year-old Arthur Jackson, 28-year-old Sarah Thibault and 21-year-old Laramie Elliott on charges including burglary.

Police Discuss Communications Breakdowns Following BART Shooting Verdict

Police agencies throughout the San Francisco Bay area this week discuss communication breakdowns and logistical problems that hindered Oakland's response to unrest after this month's Johannes Mehserle verdict. Protests after white former BART police officer was convicted on July 8 of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Oscar Grant, who was black, led to looting, vandalism and fires.

8-year-old Girl Killed in San Jose Residential Fire

An 8-year-old girl was killed in one of three separate residential fires in San Jose early this morning, a fire spokeswoman said. The fatal fire was reported at 1:42 a.m. at an apartment building at 1671 Hamilton Ave., near Meridian Avenue. In addition to the 8-year-old girl, eight others were taken to hospitals, mostly for smoke inhalation and some for scrapes and bumps, she said. None of those injuries were serious.

Update: Rallies in Support and Opposition to Former BART Police Officer Johannes Mehserle End After a Day of Passion but No Violence

Dueling rallies in Walnut Creek over the BART Shooting Verdict are now finished with some witnesses say people on both sides spent more time yelling at each other than listening. Rallies in support of former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle and supporters of Oscar Grant closed part of the East Bay community on Monday.  Police and barricades kept the two sides separate.

BART Oversight Board Signed into Law

A BART police oversight bill signed into law on Thursday will take effect on Jan 1, 2011, exactly two years after a BART police officer shot and killed an unarmed passenger on the Fruitvale station platform in Oakland, BART officials announced Friday.

Walnut Creek Police Prepare for Pro-Johannes Mehserle Rally Monday

Walnut Creek police Chief Joel Bryden says the Police Department has plans in place to ensure that a pro-Johannes Mehserle rally scheduled for Monday remains peaceful. The rally, which is being organized on Facebook, is in support of Mehserle, a former BART police officer, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter on July 8 for fatally shooting Oscar Grant III in the back on a platform at the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland on Jan. 1, 2009.

Mehserle Sentencing Set for November 5th in the Involuntary Manslaughter of Oscar Grant

Johannes Mehserle will learn his punishment in the involuntary manslaughter of Oscar Grant on the first Friday in November. A Los Angeles Superior Court Wednesday set sentencing for Mehserle for 8:30 a.m. on November 5th of this year.  That's less than two months shy of the second anniversary of Grant's shooting death on the platform of the Fruitvale BART Station in Oakland.

Court: BART Shooting Sentence Could Be Delayed Until October or November

Former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle may not learn his sentence for the involuntary manslaughter of unarmed passenger Oscar Grant until October or November. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Superior Court confirmed the timing to KRON 4 News.  No specific date for sentencing has yet been set.
